Erik Thurman is a comics journalist and educator who travels throughout the world for his work, but currently calls the rooftops of Seoul, South Korea, home.
His comics have appeared in The Nib, The Melton Prior Institut, The Huffington Post, Mingjing News, World Comics India, Localiiz Hong Kong, [the] Absolute, Pao-Pao, The Cartoon Picayune, Reed Magazine, The Comics Grinder, among other print and digital publications.
The American Immigrant, Thurman's graphic memoir trilogy, catalogs his experience working as a teacher in the Philippines, South Korea, and Chile, while paying off his own impoverishing debts from studying in America. Working with educators, activists, public administrators, and students, Thurman tries to address the issues of the unaffordability and inaccessibility of global public education, while offering solutions that students can take. The series has been nominated for a Reportager Award. He also belongs to The Authors Guild.
Aside from his night job drawing comics, Thurman continues to teach English to young children in West Seoul. His hobbies include hiking, drinking coffee, and fighting corruption.
